Os caminhos da ecocrítica na trilogia MaddAddão: percorrendo as fronteiras da distopia e da ficção especulativa atwoodiana

Abstract

The dissertative text, which is now presented, aims to analyze the MaddAddam trilogy – composed of the works Oryx and Crake [2003 (2018)], The Year of the Flood [2009 (2018)] and MaddAddam [2013 (2019)] – by Canadian author Margaret Atwood through the life of ecocriticism. However, in order to understand the paths taken by the author in creating an environmentally oriented narrative, it was necessary to adopt an approach from the perspective of ecocriticism, articulating it with studies on science fiction, speculative fiction – used here as an umbrella term encompassing various subgenres – and ustopia, as well as highlighting the main elements of the trilogy that offer relevant contributions to environmental literary studies. Thus, we divided the research into three chapters, where we will carry out exploratory analyses, with a qualitative and bibliographical approach. First, we will analyze the work from the perspective of speculative and science fiction, according to theorists such as Robert Heinlein, Samuel R. Delaney, R. B. Gill, Oziewicz, Naiara Araújo, Darko Suvin, Farah Mendlesohn, Russell Blackford, Hugo Gernsback, Adam Roberts, Damien Broderick, Samuel Delany; then, through the approach proposed by Margaret Atwood of dystopia and utopia, with the theoretical support of Coral Ann Howells, Margaret Atwood, Gregory Claeys, Tom Moylan; and finally, how these genres and subgenres provided a narrative of the trilogy in relation to environmental literature, also known as ecocriticism. Regarding perceptions on ecocriticism, we use the observations of authors such as Peter Barry, Greg Garrard, Cheryl Glotfelty, Glen A. Love, William Rueckert.
