ARTES INDÍGENAS TENETEHARA: Instituições, artistas e coletividade

Abstract

This research focuses on Indigenous arts in Brazil, addressing its institutions, artists, and collectivity. The study raises questions about how Indigenous art is currently discussed and, secondly, how contemporary Indigenous art dialogues with the traditional art of the Tenetehara (Guajajara) people and their collective. The research aims to investigate the relationships between art and anthropology, using an interdisciplinary approach; explore specific issues related to the works of the Tenetehara ethnic group, including those by Guajajara artists, their aesthetics, and the technical quality embedded in the universe of these groups; and analyze Indigenous productions and the spaces where they are exhibited, from ethnological museums to visual arts institutions. Through the analysis of three works by Guajajara artists — Zahy Guajajara, Santos Guajajara, and Genilson Guajajara — we will investigate how the connection between collectivity and contemporary Indigenous art occurs. Indigenous peoples still suffer various forms of violence and are silenced daily. With the aim of raising awareness among nonIndigenous people about the culture of these peoples and valuing it, this research is of great importance in contributing to the studies on Indigenous art in Brazil. The research, using an inductive method, will include literature review and analysis, documentary analysis of art collections within their historical context, formal analysis, as well as mapping of works and artists from physical and virtual collections. Through bibliographical analysis of the works of Zanoni (2015), Ribeiro (1980), Berbert (2020), Esbell (2021), Ribeiro (1986), Gell (2018) and Samain (2012) we will address the anthropological and aesthetic analysis of the works within the categories of contemporary Indigenous art and poetics.
