ENQUADRAMENTO NO JORNALISMO REGIONAL COM PERSPECTIVA DE GÊNERO: ANÁLISE DAS NOTÍCIAS PUBLICADAS SOBRE MULHERES EM PORTAIS AMAZÔNICOS

Abstract

It is observed from gender and journalism studies that women are poorly represented in the news. They occupy only supporting spaces in journalistic articles or even there is no space at all. Therefore, this dissertation has the proposal to answer the following research problem: what is the content and framework of news about women in Amazonian web news? For this, the research combines the concepts of gender (SCOTT, 2019; LAURETIS, 2019), intersectionality (AKOTIRENE, 2021) and framing (ENTMAN, 1993) to understand which image of women is currently constructed in regional portals, which even have their own production logics and are characterized by proximity (PERUZZO, 2005). As a general objective, we seek to identify the characteristics of news coverage about women and, specifically, we intend to i) verify whether the news includes an intersectional view, ii) observe the existence of biases in the texts constructed when talking about women and iii) list the main framings perceived in journalistic content. Here, 9 sites located in the capitals of states that belong to the Legal Amazon are adopted as research objects, since there is still an absence of the North and Northeast regions in Brazilian scientific research, including studies on Communication and Gender. In this work, three hypotheses are investigated: the woman is, mostly, framed as a victim in the news and there is little incidence of articles with gender-sensitive frames in the analyzed portals (H1), there is a limited number of articles that propose to include markers intersectional when talking about issues related to women (H2), and most news about women has biases in the development of texts and asymmetries in the treatment of sources (H3). The corpus of the study comprises 617 news published on newspaper websites during the years 2021 and 2022. To answer the question, the study is of a quantitative nature and uses as methodological tools the Framing Analysis (SOARES, 2006; PORTO, 2004) allied to Content Analysis (BARDIN, 2011) for a better understanding of the data. As a result, it was observed that the coverage of women in the Amazon is marked by the theme of violence and negative facts and the framing of women that predominates is that of victim, following the trend observed in studies that include other Brazilian regions. Intersectionality and gender-sensitive framings are barely visible in the news and some textual biases, with emphasis on victimization, were found in the production of the nine portals. Thus, the coverage analyzed here reveals a framing of a victimized and little humanized woman, a portrait that remains strong in journalism, regardless of the region in which the vehicle is located.
