Abstract: Solid waste is ubiquitous today and, as such, is a feature of every landscape. According to data from the Brazilian Association of Waste and the Environment (ABREMA) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the volume of waste generated in Brazil is gradually increasing each year (between 0.4% and 1% annually), while Brazilian state and local governments, particularly in the North and Northeast regions, face difficulties in ensuring the implementation of the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) (Law No. 12,305/2010). In the Northeast, 56% (10.5 million metric tons) of waste is disposed of improperly, with open dumps being the primary disposal method. This is compounded by the lack of selective collection initiatives and programs, the integration of recyclable material collectors, and reverse logistics—all key components of the PNRS. This situation results in socio-environmental damage and places a heavy financial burden on public coffers. The policy appropriately highlights alternatives for overcoming this scenario through cooperation among municipalities, promoting the creation of intermunicipal public consortia; however, this requires recognition of the individual challenges faced by each entity in order for the recommended cooperation to take place. From this perspective, the general objective of this study is to present an overview of the current solid waste management model in the municipalities of the Baixada Maranhense and to provide geographical insights for the establishment of an intermunicipal solid waste consortium in accordance with the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS). The Baixada, which represents a unique treasure in the region—not only in Maranhão but also in the Northeast—features a landscape of low-lying terrain and vast floodplains resembling the Pantanal of Mato Grosso. It comprises 21 municipalities (with more than 500,000 inhabitants), with municipalities that are almost like islands in the midst of vast expanses of water, but only three municipalities have environmentally appropriate waste disposal facilities. To conduct this research, both indirect and direct documentation techniques were employed, with an emphasis on collecting primary and secondary data from ABREMA, the National Sanitation Information System (SNIS), municipal governments, and fieldwork, covering the period from 2007 to 2022. These data were analyzed and discussed in light of dialectical historical materialism. The results revealed the precarious nature of municipal structures dedicated to sanitation services and policies Fundamentally, there is a widespread problem of illegal solid waste dumping sites, coupled with a failure to provide data to the information systems that are essential for the implementation and development of public policies. This situation places strain on and directly impacts the environment, resulting in the contamination of the air, soil, and, above all, water—a matter of grave concern, given that the daily lives of local populations are intrinsically linked to water resources. It was also found that, although there is a certain degree of coordination among the region’s municipalities, political, economic, and technical obstacles stand in the way of achieving an environmentally sound solution aligned with the PNRS.

Abstract: Socio-environmental conflicts imply recurring threats to environmental integrity and the
living conditions of communities residing in conservation units and their surrounding areas,
especially in territories where human presence predates the institutionalization of these
areas. The creation of units such as Parks and Environmental Protection Areas (APAs) in
already occupied spaces tends to intensify tensions by imposing restrictions on land use,
often without full recognition of local practices. This study aims to analyze the socioenvironmental conflicts arising from the creation of the Serra de Santo Antônio State Park,
in the municipality of Campo Maior-PI, established in 2019, with an emphasis on changes
in the geographical dynamics of the area. The research is based on the analysis of geospatial
data on land use and land cover (MapBiomas, 2003–2023), from IBGE (2022), information
from the park's Management Plan, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and
field observations, articulated with the typology of socio-environmental conflicts. The
results indicate that, after 2019, there was an intensification of land use activities,
particularly the expansion of anthropogenic areas, the opening of access roads, and the use
of the area for housing and agricultural activities within and around the APA (Environmental
Protection Area). This highlights the reconfiguration of the local geographic dynamics and
contributes to the aggravation of socio-environmental conflicts, especially due to the legal
restrictions imposed and the persistence of traditional practices, often dissociated from the
formal recognition of the conservation unit. It is concluded that the identified conflicts are
related to overlapping land uses, weak implementation of environmental policies, and
limited community participation in the management process. This reinforces the need for
such processes to involve strategies that consider the specificities of local populations and
promote greater integration between environmental conservation and social reality.

Abstract: Domestic Violence is present in most affective relationships, and in order for women to
leave abusive relationships it is often necessary to have the intervention of family
members or Public Security agencies. Knowing that the fight against Domestic and
Gender Violence requires the contribution of different fields of knowledge, in this work
we discussed the theme from the perspective of feminist and gender geography, which

made it possible to understand how this phenomenon is distributed across different intra-
urban spaces and its impact on different social classes. Therefore, the main objective of

this research is to analyze cases of domestic violence against women in the context of
socio-spatial inequality and vulnerabilities in the Itaqui-Bacanga area, from 2019 to 2021,
in São Luís – MA. The method used was Historical and Dialectical Materialism and the
methodology relied on both quantitative and qualitative approaches. For data processing
and spatialization, we used Excel 2013 and the Geographic Information System. The
study area faces problems arising from disorderly urbanization, which reflects the social
inequalities present in this territory. One of the main problems faced in the Itaqui-Bacanga
Area is Domestic Violence. The results showed that most women victims of violence live
in the neighborhoods of Anjo da Guarda and Vila Embratel. Based on the survey of the
main urban facilities, it is possible to observe that the main services are also concentrated
in Anjo da Guarda and Vila Embratel. The number of daycare centers identified is still
insufficient, which directly impacts the lives of mothers who wish to access the job market
and thus achieve financial independence. Despite the problems identified, we found the
presence of public policies operating in this territory, such as the 5th Special Court for
Civil and Consumer Relations, which facilitates the access to justice for socially
vulnerable people, the Social Assistance Reference Center (CRAS), which works on the
prevention of social risks and vulnerabilities, and the CREAS, which provides support in
cases where the person is already experiencing violence.
