Abstract: The present work proposes the study of Afro-Brazilian religions (Umbanda) and has as a guiding question:
what are the representations of Mary (Our Lady) for the women of the Tent of Umbanda Nossa Senhora da
Conceição in Imperatriz-MA and how they operationalize these representations. To this end, the following
theoretical framework was used: Reginaldo Prandi (1996; 1998; 2011), Sérgio Ferretti (2005), Mundicarmo
Ferretti (1996), Kabengele Munanga (2019), to talk about Afro-Brazilian religions in their historicity, as
well as Quijano (2005), with the category of decoloniality to critically treat the colonial process and James
Scott (2013), who helps me to think about the category "modes of resistance" looking at syncretism as a
way of subverting these religions. From the perspective of gender, race and ancestry, the discussion
mobilizes authors such as: Patrícia Hill Collins (2016; 2019), Lélia Gonzalez (2020), Suely Carneiro (2019)
and María Lugones (2014), as well as Rosinalda Simoni (2019), Hélen Jardim and Dulce Voss (2022).
When it comes to the hagiographic and mythological part we have Prandi (2001a; 2001b) and Pierre Verger
(1981). To arrive at the representations, I bring as a theoretical contribution Roger Chartier (2002), Émile
Durkheim (1986) and Magnani (2004). Methodologically this work relies on ethnographyc research, which
I
did participant observation, use of the field diary, photographs, application of semi-structured
questionnaire and also the use of whatsapp. The interlocutors are seven women of which one is the
mother of the Tent and the other six are mediums of the house. The centrality of women in ceremonies,
manual and spiritual work around the festivals, and in the social dimension is conclusive. This protagonism
that occurs within Tenda and beyond comes from the perceptions of affection and care that these women
have regarding Mary. She is a mother, protector and helper in needs, but her representations go beyond this
scope. Mary becomes an inspiration and resistance for these women and for Tenda, at the same time that
she is the one who “helps us”. It is possible to see that this dimension spreads from there to Tenda’s social
projects.

Abstract: This research is part of the debate on public policies to combat domestic violence against women and
the tensions between their normative promises and concrete implementation in state services. By
investigating the Maranhense Women's House in Imperatriz, Maranhão, it asks whether and how this
service promotes women's human rights and contributes to breaking the cycle of violence, considering
the obstacles of an unequal socioeconomic context and a justice system that often revictimizes its
users. The objective of the study is to understand the institutional dynamics that shape the House's
activities, based on gender, race, and class divisions. The research adopts an ethnographic method,
combined with documentary analysis, focusing on the psychosocial sector's service records for the
year 2023. The findings reveal that, although the House is a strategic space for reception and referral,
its operation is hampered by structural gaps, bureaucratic routines, and barriers to access. The
theoretical and practical implications point to the need to reconfigure public policies based on situated
and intersectional listening. The theoretical contribution is based on Saffioti (2015), Federici (2017),
and Gonzalez (2020), who understand violence as a structural phenomenon, functional to patriarchy
and capitalism. In addition, Crenshaw (2002) and Collins (2016) are mobilized as fundamental
references for understanding intersectionality as an analytical lens that highlights inequality in access
to rights. Dialogues with Gago (2020) and Pasinato (2011) allow us to problematize the effects of the
institutionalization of the feminist agenda in care practices. This is an original study that contributes
to the field of sociological, feminist, and public policy studies by shedding light on the impasses and
potential of a state service in combating domestic violence against women in a city marked by
inequalities.

Abstract: This dissertation focuses on analyzing the functioning of the Legal Abortion Service in a referral
maternity hospital in southern Maranhão, with emphasis on the perceptions, practices, and resistances
of health professionals working in a public maternity unit linked to the Unified Health System (SUS). The
topic gains relevance in the current Brazilian context, marked by intense political and moral disputes
over reproductive rights, especially regarding legal abortion. Although guaranteed by law in three
specific situations — risk to the pregnant woman’s life, pregnancy resulting from rape, and fetal
anencephaly — legal abortion remains surrounded by symbolic, institutional, and moral obstacles, which
hinder its implementation as a public policy. The central issue of this research lies in the finding that the
legal abortion service, despite being a guaranteed right, is often rendered invisible, precarious, and
treated as an exception within the hospital structure, raising questions about the role of the State,
institutions, and health professionals in ensuring (or denying) this right. Thus, the main objective of the
study is to understand how the legal abortion service has been functioning in a referral maternity hospital
in southern Maranhão, considering professional practices, ethical conflicts, and institutional barriers that
shape its operation. The methodology is qualitative, with socio-anthropological and feminist inspiration,
combining direct field observation, field notes, and the application of semi-structured questionnaires to
four professional categories: psychologists, social workers, nurses, and a physician. The research site
is a macro-regional public referral maternity hospital in southern Maranhão, the only institution in the
region authorized to provide the service. Data collection was preceded by a long bureaucratic process
of authorization from the Ethics Committee and institutional health bodies, which in itself revealed
significant obstacles to conducting research on this subject. Data analysis was based on Bardin’s (1977)
thematic content analysis, with interpretative categories developed from professionals’ discourses, also
considering silences, refusals, and hesitations as integral parts of the data. The findings show that the
service, although officially available, relies more on the individual commitment of ethically engaged
professionals than on a solid institutional policy. Social workers emerged as the most aware of their role
as guarantors of rights, while psychologists demonstrated sensitivity but with training gaps. Nurses
showed a high rate of conscientious objection and lack of knowledge of the legal framework. The only
physician who responded revealed technical expertise but also a certain ethical detachment. It is
concluded that legal abortion, in the studied context, is far from being consolidated as a fully accessible
right, as it is constantly threatened by moral, bureaucratic, and institutional resistances. The research
reaffirms the importance of expanding critical listening within the SUS, strengthening professional
training policies, and confronting the institutional silencing that characterizes reproductive social justice
in Brazil.

Abstract: The Drug and Violence Resistance Education Program (PROERD), developed by the Military Police,
aims to prevent drug use and violence among children and adolescents. This research set out to
investigate the representations constructed by the social actors involved in the dynamics of PROERD.
Among the specific objectives, the following stand out: to analyze the theoretical and practical
foundations of the program; to examine the effects of the Military Police's presence in schools; and
to understand how the dynamics of the program are perceived by its participants. Methodologically,
the study combines a literature review, multi-sited ethnography (Marcus, 1995), and online
ethnography (Leitão & Gomes, 2017, 2022), in addition to informal conversations with the research
subjects (Fonseca, 1998). A gap was found in the academic production on PROERD, with 49 studies
identified on the Sucupira Platform, all carried out by members of the military corporation itself,
which highlights the need for more plural and critical approaches. The analysis mobilizes the concepts
of representation and stigmatization (Goffman, 2002, 2004; Hall, 2016), in addition to the notion of
governmentality (Foucault, 2008), which allows us to understand PROERD as a technology of
pastoral control, associated with disciplinary practices (Foucault, 1987). The approach of
“anthropology of the margins” (Das & Poole, 2008) contributed to explaining how peripheral
communities experience the militarization of schools, in tension with social rights. The notion of
“bare life” (Agamben, 2004) highlighted the reduction of young bodies to targets of biopolitical
management. The results indicate that PROERD, by naturalizing the presence of the Military Police
as an educational agent, contributes to the reproduction of social hierarchies and the marginalization
of impoverished territories, masking violence under the rhetoric of protection. The research thus
contributes to unveiling the mechanisms of behavior formation and the coloniality present in
“pacification” policies (Oliveira, 2016), revealing the role of the State in the normalization and
management of social life in contexts of vulnerability. This study aims to contribute to the debate on
the social and symbolic impacts of PROERD, examining its educational practices, institutional
performances, and its effects on the formation of behaviors among children and educators.
