Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the visual modes present in disinformation about universities,
along with the related comments, in order to understand how imagery contributes to the
process of associating information with the idea of truth, as well as the implications of its use.
Based on this objective, four specific goals were established: (I) to identify the visual modes
used in the construction of disinformation about universities; (II) to examine how visual
modes are organized within disinformation to construct meaning, based on the analytical
framework proposed by the Grammar of Visual Design (GVD); (III) to understand how the
visual modes present in disinformation interact with the written mode to produce meaning;
and (IV) to investigate the implications of the use of visual modes in disinformation,
considering sensitivity to initial conditions, based on the analysis of users’ comments on posts
containing disinformation. For this purpose, the study draws on Wardle and Derakhshan
(2023) to discuss information disorder and disinformation; on Morin (2011) and LarsenFreeman and Cameron (2008) to address Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS); and on Hodge
and Kress (1988) to discuss Social Semiotics (SS). The empirical material consisted of three
disinformation posts about universities that were fact-checked by the agencies AFP, E-farsas,
and Lupa, as well as users’ comments related to these posts. The Grammar of Visual Design
(Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006) was used as an analytical tool. The analysis of the
comments took into account sensitivity to initial conditions, an essential feature of Complex
Adaptive Systems. The results suggest that images play a significant role in meaning-making
within multimodal disinformation compositions, contributing to the construction of an
appearance of truth. Thus, these images mobilize emotions and may reinforce beliefs,
increasing readers’ cognitive fluency and favoring their acceptance of the content.

Abstract: This research analyzes the development of reader training in two reading clubs located in
the interior of Northeast Brazil, specifically in Ceará and Piauí: the Clube de Leitura
Fronteira do Saber, in Nova Olinda (CE); and the Clube do Livro do IFPI, in Floriano (PI).
The study examines the practices developed in these two clubs, which promote reading and
the development of reader training beyond formal education. The research presents
theoretical contributions by expanding the literature on the subject, and practical
contributions by providing an analysis of methodologies and experiences of reading clubs
embedded in specific social contexts, which can serve as a reference for professionals
interested in similar initiatives. The theoretical framework is based on authors who discuss
shared reading, reading clubs or circles, conceptions of reading, and the formation of literary
readers, such as: Cosson (2020, 2021a, 2021b, 2021c), Petit (2009, 2010), Maria (2016),
Kleiman (2002), Todorov (2023), Reyes (2012), Yunes ([2010?], 2014), Lajolo and
Zilberman (2019), Leffa (1996, 1999), Colomer (2007), Garcia (2003), Ceccantini (2009).
Methodologically, a quantitative-qualitative approach was adopted, with a multiple case
study design (Yin, 2015), using questionnaires, interviews, and document analysis. The
analyses were conducted using descriptive statistics (Gil, 2019) and content analysis (Bardin,
2016). The results indicate that, in the Fronteira do Saber Reading Club, the activities of the
Book Club and Reading Circles are central practices for the development of participants as
readers. In the IFPI Floriano Book Club, the data reveal that the initiative constitutes a
welcoming and enjoyable experience, characterized as a space for the enjoyment of reading,
and not for obligation, in which participants can express themselves authentically about their
readings and the construction of meaning.

Título: A presença do teatro de William Shakespeare no romance de Machado de Assis pela perspectiva da teoria mimética de René Girard
Autor: RODRIGUES, Emilly Silva
Primeiro orientador: QUEVEDO, Rafael Campos
Abstract: This study investigates the resonance of William Shakespeare’s theatre in the fiction of
Machado de Assis, taking as its central axis the theory of mimetic desire formulated by René
Girard. The research analyzes how Machado appropriates, displaces, and re-signifies
Shakespearean models, particularly those related to the representation of jealousy, rivalry,
and symbolic violence. The primary corpus consists of the plays Hamlet, The Tempest, and
Othello, which are examined in comparison with the novels The Posthumous Memoirs of
Brás Cubas and Dom Casmurro. Although separated by distinct historical, cultural, and
aesthetic contexts, these works converge in their treatment of human impasses arising from
the mediation of their characters’ aspirations. The general objective of the study is to
understand how Shakespeare’s presence manifests itself in Machado’s work through themes
such as the confluence of the tragic and the comic, mimetic incitement, and love oriented
toward fatality. This dialogue is not proposed as a case of simple influence or imitation, but
rather as a procedure of critical emulation on the part of the Brazilian author. As a research
problem, the study asks how mimetic desire, understood as desire suggested by an Other, as
theorized by Girard (2009) in Deceit, Desire, and the Novel, underpins the relationships
among the central characters of these works and what effects this dynamic produces in the
construction of each narrative. From a theoretical and methodological standpoint, the
research is grounded primarily in René Girard’s mimetic theory (1990; 2010), especially as
developed in Shakespeare: Theatre of Envy and Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the
World, articulated with contributions from Shakespearean and Machadian criticism. In this
regard, Jan Kott’s studies (1998), particularly Shakespeare Our Contemporary, are
highlighted for emphasizing Shakespeare’s enduring relevance, as are the works of Antonio
Candido (1977; 2006), notably Literatura e Sociedade and “Esquema Machado de Assis”,
which address the formation of Brazilian literature and central aspects of Machado’s fiction.
The studies of João Cezar de Castro Rocha (2013; 2017) are also of great importance to this
research, especially with respect to practices of emulation and critical appropriation. These
theoretical frameworks make it possible to situate Machado de Assis as a writer who engages
actively with the Western tradition while simultaneously subverting it from his historical and
cultural position. The results of the research indicate that the works analyzed are structured
around triangular relationships of desire, in which the figure of the mediator plays a central
role in intensifying rivalry, vanity, and jealousy. However, while Shakespearean tragedy
leads to explicit violence and sacrificial expiation, the Machadian novel displaces this
conflict onto the plane of language, memory, and narrative instability. It is therefore
concluded that Shakespeare’s presence in Machado operates as a creative and critical
strategy through which tragic models are reinscribed in order to give form to the moral,
social, and subjective tensions of nineteenth-century Brazil, confirming the vitality of the
classics and their capacity to generate new readings over time (Calvino, 1993).

Abstract: This research connects studies of Cognitive Linguistics with advertising texts involving
the buying and selling of automobiles. Therefore, it aims to differentiate between
Semantics and Pragmatics, examine the history of Cognitive Linguistics and its
thematic axes, and highlight conceptual metaphors according to the classifications
established by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson in their work "Metaphors of Everyday
Life." Furthermore, the topic is supported by works such as those of Eleanor Rosch,
Jean Baudrillard, José Haroldo Bandeira Sousa, José Luiz Fiorin, Lilian Ferrari,
Michael Reddy, Monica Fontenelle Carneiro, Roland Barthes, Ruth Amossy, and Tony
Beber Sardinha. Other linguistic fields (Philosophy of Language and Semantics) that
already address the definition of genre and characterize semantic properties were also
used as support for the research. In light of these theorists, particularly those in
Cognitive Linguistics, conceptual metaphors can be seen as a field of experience, that
is, they explain terms that move beyond the usual semantic field into the realm of
"imagination." Thus, the metaphorical stylistic resource appears in conventional texts
and is often targeted at specific audiences. Therefore, this study used advertisements
as the corpus. Furthermore, the advertisements analyzed are those from the
audiovisual field, published between 2019 and 2020, on Brazilian websites. The
methodology used a qualitative approach, through analysis, with bibliographic
procedures, and the deductive method, based on the selection of documents, the
construction of hypotheses and objectives, and the formulation of indicators that
supported the final interpretation. This approach also involved exploration, grouping
the information extracted from the texts and interpreting them, in accordance with the
initial objectives and other findings. Therefore, regarding the objectives, it is important
to analyze the use of conceptual metaphors in audiovisual automotive advertisements
and understand how they influence vehicle purchases. Furthermore, the research
results demonstrate the importance of using metaphors as a means of connecting
consumers and products, as a significant number of these linguistic devices were
observed with metaphorical expressions such as "MACHINES ARE PEOPLE,"
"MACHINES ARE UPDATES," and "MACHINES AWAKEN SENSATIONS,"
demonstrating the need to highlight genuinely human and technological aspects.
